The Waterfront Shopping Center has teamed up with Allegheny GoatScape to clear out the overgrowth along the Great Allegheny Passage trail and the Monongahela riverbanks this summer. The initiative aims to provide visitors with a clear view of the river using an eco-friendly alternative to traditional landscaping. The goats began roaming the trail in early May and will remain and eat until the leaves turn brown.
“We take pride in taking great care of our grounds, not only for our patrons but for the nearby communities as well,” said Carey Kann, general manager at The Waterfront. “Now visitors and neighbors can shop, walk and dine with a clear view of the river.”
The goats will begin their work at Amity Circle, just off of Waterfront Drive, between TGI Friday’s and Pizzeria Uno along the walking/biking trail. There are currently five goats for the vegetation removal, with a minature donkey – to protect and lead the goats – set to join them soon.
Each goat is treated like part of a family unit at Allegheny GoatScape, complete with names to complement their personalities. The goats managing The Waterfront project are Dice, Flash, Meg, Luna, Dot and Floppy. Fun fact: before they began their careers in landscaping, the goats worked in dairy farming.
Guests are encouraged to observe the goats while at The Waterfront. The area will be fenced off with plenty of room for onlookers. Amity Circle also has parking for cars and bikes and has direct access to the trail.
